According to some of the traders at the Ahia Ohuru Market, local government officials besiege the market regularly to collect as much as N2000 and N5000 from traders.
However the market is still in such a sorry state despite the stipulated levy being paid by the traders to the local government official in whose jurisdiction the market falls in.
Ahia Ohuru is one of the very deplorable markets in Abia state that needs urgent attention from constituted authorities.
Another is the famous Ariaria International Market which is touted to be one of the largest open markets in the whole of West Africa. It was even nicknamed “China of Africa” because of its versatility in the making of wears and leather works.
Another trader expressed hopes that the state government led by Okezie Ikpeazu will move in to clean it up and probably carry out a proper restructuring of the entire market. He also called on the state government to waddle into the lack of maintenance by the local government despite the millions of Naira generated as revenue by same.
